Call Volume
In 2010 Harwinton EMS responded to 376 medical emergencies and motor vehicle accidents and an additional 42 responses to assist the Fire Department on non EMS calls. This brought our total responses to 418 for the year. This is a 68% increase in medical responses from just six years ago. Our calls range from vehicle accidents to traumatic injuries to medical emergencies. The ambulance is also dispatched to certain incidents requiring a fire department response to ensure quick access to medical treatment should any of our firefighters become injured. These types of responses include car fires, building fires, and brush fires to name a few.
Paramedic Intercepts
In
addition to our response there are times when it is necessary to have a
paramedic level responder to assist with a patient’s treatment.
Paramedics are licensed by the State to administer drugs and initiate
procedures that are beyond the level of an Intermediate service.
Harwinton primarily uses Campion Ambulance for our paramedic
response. Burlington Ambulance and Bristol Hospital medics are
called when Campion is unavailable.
Paramedic responses have increased in recent years upon the adoption of the Emergency Medical Dispatch System (EMD).
Previous to this system it was up to up to our responders to determine
the need for Paramedic level care and request it. Today this is
determined by the emergency dispatcher through a series of questions
they ask the caller. Although the call may not always end up
requiring the services of a Paramedic it is better to have them enroute in case they are needed. If the it is determined they are not needed they are requested to cancel.
Each time we transport with a Paramedic from Campion
Ambulance, the Ambulance Association receives a bill for $320. This is
paid out of our operating budget and is not always recovered through the
patient’s insurance company. Listed below is the number of times a
paramedic was dispatched to Harwinton for an emergency response.
The number jumps up in 2007 when the EMD system was started by our
regional dispatch. Implementation of this system is required by
the State of Connecticut.
