The Town of Harwinton, like many other towns throughout the State, instituted a Volunteer Benefit Program number of years back to assist in recruiting and retaining volunteer emergency responders. This is a way to recognize the amount of time volunteers dedicate to serving our community. The program also allows members to offset some of the personal expenses that are sometimes incurred while volunteering.
Attendance to calls, drills and other functions are tracked and tallied on an annual basis. The amounts of the stipends usually are $250, $500, $750 or $1,000, with only the most active individuals reaching the top two categories. The amounts are determined on an annual basis by the Harwinton Emergency Services Committee and the Harwinton Board of Finance based on the total number of volunteers and the amount of funding available.
